Can VR Build Cultural Bridges?
In a world of increasing division, could VR help us understand perspectives different from our own? Virtual Journalist was our attempt to find out.
The Approach
Users take on the role of a journalist experiencing stories from different cultural perspectives. The VR experience visualizes "empathic perspectives"-showing not just what happened, but how it felt from inside that culture.
Measuring Empathy
A key challenge was measuring cultural empathy before and after the experience. We developed metrics combining self-report and behavioral indicators.
Findings
Participants showed increased cultural empathy scores post-experience, particularly for cultures they had little prior exposure to. The immersion made abstract cultural differences concrete and personal.
Ethical Considerations
We were careful about cultural representation. VR empathy experiences risk oversimplifying or misrepresenting cultures. We worked with cultural consultants and were transparent about our limitations.
ISMAR Community
Presenting at ISMAR (the top mixed/augmented reality venue) let us engage with researchers thinking deeply about immersive experiences and their social impact.
Looking Forward
Virtual Journalist is a small step toward using immersive technology for social good. The potential for VR in cultural education, conflict resolution, and global citizenship excites me.
